Things To Do Each Season

Spring

  1. See swallows hunting over the bog for insects
  2. Watch for frogs breeding in ponds at the Bog of Allen Nature Centre
  3. Search fro Bog Rosemary, the first of the heathers to flower each year

Summer

  1. See rare peatland plants, like sundews, in the Bog of Allen Nature Centre
  2. Listen for the cry of the curlew as it sets up breeding territory on the bog
  3. Search for water bugs in bog ponds
  4. Collect frochans in the bog woodlands

Autumn

  1. See the carpet of colourful bog mosses come alive in the autumn sunshine
  2. Watch the landscape changing colour into autumn tones of red and gold
  3. See the water levels in the bog rise as rainfall increases and temperatures rise
  4. See the bog colour purple as the heathers come into flower

Winter

  1. See spiders webs covered in early morning sundew
  2. Search for berries in the wetter parts of the bog
  3. View the open landscape becoming crystallised in the cold air
  4. In dark evenings, view Orion’s Belt, Taurus and the Plough
